5 things to know about country legend George Jones
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Five things to know about country music superstar George Jones, who died Friday at 81:
1. THE VOICE: The only debate over the decades has been who has the second-best voice in country music. Or maybe just music. His voice could get your party rolling and end it by making you cry. Merle Haggard puts it best: "The world has lost the greatest country singer of all time. Amen."
2. THE SONG: Not only did he have The Voice, but Jones also recorded many archetypal country songs, including the one widely acknowledged as the best: "He Stopped Loving Her Today." Written by fellow Country Music Hall of Fame member Bobby Braddock and Curly Putnam, the blue-flame weeper won a Grammy and took the Country Music Association's song of the year — twice.
3. THE PROBLEMS: Jones was almost as famous for his problems as he was his music. Stories about epic alcohol and drug binges circulate around Nashville and his marital problems were titillating folks on Music Row long before tabloids trolled for content.
4. THE HUMOR: Jones had a devilish sense of humor and he was never afraid to turn it on himself. The singer famously hopped aboard a riding lawn mower a couple of times when in search of drink and parodied the moment in not only his own music video, but in those for Hank Williams Jr., Vince Gill and John Rich, too. 5. THE LEGACY: Jones reflected real life in his music and lived it as well. His troubles, made public with unsparing self analysis, only made his songs seem more real. As Brad Paisley wrote Friday, Jones helped us see "that it is not the stumble or fall that counts, but the willingness to stand again."

set your iPod to play the tunes in alphabetical order? I decided to do that around Christmas time. Very enlightening! I sure know what my favorite songs are. Nothing like hearing a dozen versions of Blue Christmas in a row.

I have two iPods, both hooked up to speakers. One in the living room and one in my bedroom. When I got my first iPod I had around 900 CDs. I put all of my favorite songs on the iPods, thousands of them. I have an eclectic taste in music. I love classic country and I love the old pop songs from the 50s. You can even throw in a few rock songs. I love Joe South and CCR. I have just discovered that I really like Jools Holland so much that I ordered his Friends CD from Amazon. I don’t care very much for todays country music. I don’t think there is very much talent there. Not like Conway Twitty, George Jones and Johnny Cash. When those guys were in their heyday Jim and I went to many of their concerts. I will probably have a day of mourning when old Jones passes.
Speaking of Jones, he is going to be at the Peoria Civic Center on March 24th. I love George but I am passing on this concert. I have seen Jones many times and a few times up close for pics as I was a member of his fan club for many years. To go to a concert at the Civic Center in Peoria there are so many events going on there at the same time that parking up close is impossible. I don’t like to walk a mile to get to a concert. I didn’t mind that when I was young but it doesn’t tempt me now.
I have to close this as I need to go to the store for bananas. I have to keep my potassium level up.

burned to the ground on New Year’s Eve 2010. It has been rebuilt thanks to the support of the community. The planned reopening date is shortly after Thanksgiving. 37 of the previous employees will resume their previous positions. A job fair was held on the grounds at Haddad’s on Monday. Over 450 people responded to fill out applications to fill 10 – 12 positions; 7 full time and the rest part time.

This speaks as to how desperate people are for jobs here and all across the country. One 55 year old man that has been out of work for over 2 years stated that he would do anything, he didn’t care what was involved. It is so sad the state our economy is in. I thank God each day that I am blessed to have a retirement and good health insurance.
The weather has been near perfect the last couple of days although it is supposed to be much colder today. Temps to fall to upper 30s or lower 40s by Thursday night.
I feel really remiss that I forgot to mention 12 September was the 80th birthday of my favorite classic country singer of all time, George Jones. For many years I belonged to his fan club. When Jim became ill was when I let the membership lapse. Just too many things for me to keep up with. I have seen Jones in concert many times including his final concert with Tammy Wynette titled ‘One.’ I even have a picture hidden away somewhere of me giving old George a hug. I have about 130 of his CDs and lots of autographed pictures of him. One of these days I am going to list it all on Craig’s List.
This is not a very good picture of George Jones. It was taken backstage at a concert in Ashland Kentucky. I was next in line to get my picture taken with George. I am still looking for that picture.
I need to get a move on. My tune woke me up this morning at 6 AM. I went back to sleep till 6:30. Now it is time for breakfast. I haven’t had my workout yet either and I need to go to the grocery store. You all stay safe and be happy!!

Well, I am long past the age for a wild weekend but I do still have memories. LOL! And I do love George Jones.
Yesterday I had a nice surprise visit from Jim’s niece Julia and her husband from Florida. They have been going to RV rallies all across the states for the last few months. The one that they are at now is at Henry IL north of Peoria. It was really good to see them. They are not through with the rallies yet and will not be going back to Florida until November. It was really good to see them, did make me miss Julia’s mom Phyllis (Jim’s sister) and my Jim. Phyllis died just a few weeks before Jim.
I have changed the bedding and have the laundry done. I do so miss having a washer and a dryer, plus a garage. Otherwise I am quite content.
