And then there…

were only 33 days left on the Countdown to Spring.  It is drizzly and foggy here this morning and the temp is holding steady right now at 36 degrees.

As I am writing my blog I often look at a word I have written and wonder if I have used it in the right context.  The red squiggly lines underneath a word on live writer let me know if it is misspelled but not if it is used in the right context.  One of my duties at my last job at the AFB was to proof and correct officer performance reports, also to make note if the words were used in the right context.  I spent many a time running up  3 flights of stairs to the general’s office at the end of the day to confer with his secretary over the use or misuse of a word.  Looking back I can now honestly say that was my least favorite job I have had in all of my lifetime.  This was before the days of computers that corrected words for you.  No whiteout was allowed.  If you had to correct a word hopefully you could get it just right on your typewriter and lift it off and redo it.  Easier said then done.  Now I don’t give a tiddleypoop whether a word is used in the right context or not.  My blog, my words!

I have managed to get my place cleaned and dusted this week including the bathroom which I hate to clean.

I need to close for now.  It will soon be  time to head off for my doctor visit.  Update on that tomorrow.

Stay safe and be happy!!

Beth

  1. Totally understand! I worked as a proofreader for a publishing house (technical manuals) in Illinois for a few months once. Actually it was my first desk job. Not too thrilled with it, but later on, I did work as a legal secretary (just about the time computers started showing up at businesses! What a difference in production to have the spell check and most typos found. But there's no program to check for usage bloopers---just the old fashion proof-reading! Interesting post! Have a great day.

  2. I don't like cleaning the bathrooms either, but it sure is nice when the house is all clean and smells yummy! :)

  3. Hi Twin...I got my kitchen all clean and shining yesterday. Late doing it because of the trip and tiredness. Went out and got puppy pads right after Katie wrote her blog and good thing as while she didn't misfire per se...there was a leak where the edge clips onto the box. So now..a puppy pad ought to help.

SPrings about already here with my bulbs comeing up..I hate that..they'll die in the enevitable return to cold weather and freezes.

  4. I do the same analyze if I'm putting the sentences correctly. I am horrible with spelling. I use to put it into word and check it ... now I've gotten lazy ... hehe.

Hope the doctor goes well! HUGS

  5. Since Hubby retired, he does the bathroom cleaning. I never minded it, but it gives him something to do.

I pray you get good news at the doctor's visit!

  7. There are some good things that have come from computers after all! I often feel there's so much misuse out there but if we chose to use them for good things it can really be a wonderful amplifier. Our weather is about like yours temperature-wise. I see that daylight savings time is approaching and with it spring...I'm ready!

  8. I remember using my old type writer and and tap tap tapping away and cringing when I misspelled a word. It never looked right even with the correction tape! Have a great Beth I hate to clean the bathroom too!

  11. When I worked for the Navy as a Civil Service department head one of the Chief Petty Officers in my office was having a tough time writing evals on the junior sailors in our shop. He asked me to help but I explained that I was always assigned to elite units in the USAF. Since you had to be an NCO to get an assignment (I came out of tech school s a SGT) we didn't have any junior enlisted and the officers wrote our APRs (Airman Performance Reports). He spent the rest of the day shaking his head and mumbling that he should have joined the @#&%#!! Air Force!

  12. Where would we be without our wonderful computers/ just think of all the extra words, stories, and opinions that are flying around in space that never would have been.
Hope the docs is a good result. XX

  13. Hope your doctor visit went well.
Things were so different when you used a typewriter and had to have it right the first time. I've gotten very lazy with computers and spellcheck. Very lazy. But, as you mentioned, there's still usage and grammar that isn't checked by computers. I don't think a lot of people care much anymore. Especially on our blogs--LOL! ;)
