Tolerable Tuesday…

The sun is shining brightly here in the heart of Illinois at the Marigold Capital of the world. http://bethmariesmainblog.wordpress.com/2010/09/10/marigold-capital-of-the-world%E2%80%A6/  also see http://www.pekinchamber.com/  Because of this I planted marigolds around the lamp post in my front yard.  I think marigolds are so pretty but they don’t smell very nice.  I think I know a few people like that.

I am hoping the marigolds perk up after a few days.  Plants are very expensive this year.

My tomato plants.   Big Boy on the left and Early Girl on the right.    And so this is my garden.  And now I am homesick for my garden at home.  ;-(

I have to leave soon as I have an appointment to get my hair cut and also an appointment with the dentist.  Hooray!!!

Stay safe and be happy!

Beth

  1. I have just the sweet red bell pepper and a tomato. NO more Early Girls for me. Huh-uh.

I love marigolds and they are rather astringent in aroma.

  4. I've not had luck with gardening the past few years, so this year I've only got ONE tomato plant and ONE pepper plant. Maybe if I downsize, I can do better? I can only hope!

  5. Hi Beth,

My Tuesday has been fairly tolerable too - lol - although it is rather wet and cold. I like marigolds, but agree they don't smell too nice.

  8. Yes, we have found that plants are more expensive this season!:( Marigolds are good in the garden for discouraging some kinds of pests. I imagine that's the reason their fragrance is not very pleasant.:)

  9. Here I live in your neighboring state and I never knew you lived in the Marigold capital of the world. Amazing, They are pretty and because of their smell, they do keep certain things away from them,

  10. I always plant marigolds because they are easy to grow here. They are very tolerant of hot, dry weather! I didn't know they kept some bugs away, but that would explain why my grandfather ALWAYS grew them next to his strawberries. Then he would pick a marigold every Sunday and put it in his lapel to wear to church. I would smell it, forgetting from one week to the next that they didn't smell good!

  11. I miss my old gardens too. If I had it to do over, I would never buy a condo. Rule we bought under, have been changed by the board so we can't feed birds or grow any fruits for fear of attracting rats. I miss all that.

But I am growing in planters, flowers, and some mint and swss chard and lettuce. I do have some really oretty flowers and two new rose bushes. I love roses. BGB

  12. I love marigolds too. They are so sunny and bright. They can become a nuisance, but I love them anyway.

  14. I love the colour of the Marigolds. so warm and just remind you of summer, They keep blackfly off your tomatoes so that's worth smelling stinky for. Thanks for your visits Beth.

  16. We used to plant marigolds with our garden because the smell drives away bugs...works like a charm! I like the colors no matter what they smell like. This year it's mostly about snapdragons and pansies for us though we do have some hot peppers and eggplants too. So far I bring out our salamander to deal with any bug type intruders...he does a pretty fine job!
