Big Yellow Taxi
by Joni Mitchell
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel & a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
They took all the trees
Put 'em in a tree museum *
And they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see 'em
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
Hey farmer farmer
Put away that DDT * now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Please!
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
Late last night
I heard the screen door slam
And a big yellow taxi
Took away my old man
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

DeleteThere are times I think that it is the mission of the officials to cover everything with asphalt/concrete! I am saddened when I see beautiful land covered with pavement and office buildings, especially when there are many unoccupied office spaces already available.

I always liked this song too. It really is true, isn't it.
ReplyDeleteMy sons had me listen to this song on the radio several years ago....only by the Counting Crows with Vanessa Carlton. I told them it was a remake. The didn't believe me at first. I never like the remakes when I first hear them, but then they grow on me and I always like the remake better than the original in the end. This is no exception. They made a really good version of this.
ReplyDeleteThis is great! Love it! She's one of my favourites! I love music & songs with meaning. Thbis one has a lot. Thanks Beth.
ReplyDeleteGreat song the words are so true. Hope you have a lovely weekend Beth xxSheila
ReplyDeletePretty background by the way..
ReplyDeleteI'm glad i'm not the only one who can see the true meaning of this song Beth, But why is it still happening?
ReplyDeleteBig Yellow Taxi is a happy/thoughtful song, and the lyrics really make you ponder. It passes on a message, and the bit that really stick in my head is, "Don't it always seem to go/ That you don't know what you've got 'till its gone." That's true, I guess, and I think the reason most people like it so much is because they can empathize and identify with it. I think Big Yellow Taxi will be around for a while.
