And the days grow short…

when you reach September.
“Oh, it's a long, long while from May to December
But the days grow short when you reach September
When the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame
One hasn't got time for the waiting game.”
composed by Kurt Weill, with lyric by Maxwell Anderson

I have always loved the month of September.  It is the month of my birth.  September is a transition period for Illinois.  We still have warm days  mixed with cooler ones.  The leaves start turning the end of September and peak mid October.  Not so this year: because of the drought many of the leaves have already fallen and many are just hanging dead on the trees.

And speaking of the the drought, Isaac is paying us a visit.  We have had a nice steady rain since yesterday afternoon.  There were even some tornado watches posted last night.  Predicted rainfall for our immediate area is 3 – 5 inches.  Ask, and ye shall receive.
Have a nice holiday.  Stay safe and be happy!!
Beth

  1. I agree the rain will be helpful but a little too late for the growing season for sure. This morning some cooler than I thought. We didn't get the rain yet..I think it is coming soon though. Hate the hot humid days it just doesn't seem like September. Weird summer for sure. Hope your weekend goes well.

  4. We are so far inland that hurricanes are creatures of the weather channel. I wish that moisture wasn't equally a thing of the imagination for us. September is my Mom's birthday month as well. My feelings are mixed about the approach of all and winter. I despise the awful cold that most winters have and I'm not a fan of short days either. Have a great weekend my friend.

  8. I LOVE that song which is, to me, melancholy. I will be humming or singing it now for days after having read the words again.

Here we have some leaves already on the ground..the trees muct be stressed from the extreme heat and the mini drought we had.

I love September. Today is my daddy's birthday. He and Mother (his second wife) had me late in his life and Daddy would be 106 years old today had he lived. Mother was 19 I think when she had me.

My brother Paul who passed away now 2 years ago had a birthday 9/27. Daddy's 9/1, a dear cousin, 9/9 and you and I, 9/25. My grandmother, Daddy's mama was also born 9/25. XXOO

  12. What day is your birthday, Beth? September is the month of my mother's birthday.

How wonderful that you are having some rain from Isaac! We could certainly use some rain, but none has come yet.

  13. Autumn is coming early this year up here, too--despite the heat and we have had some rain. We've just had early chilly nights randomly mixed in there. I think the trees are confused. ;)

  14. We didn't have the usual heat this year, but what is so unusual for the Seattle area is that we have not had any measurable rainfall for 40 days. And there is none in the forseeable future. That is unheard of here. I'm glad the midwest is getting some benefit from Isaac. BGB

  15. What a beautiful post! You have a way with words.
We got a little rain, but not nearly as much as you. We are right on the far NE border of IL/WI. I hope we get more; we sure could use it.
    Enjoy your weekend! Hugs.
