Goodbye to my favorite…

TWINKIES!  I love Twinkies although I haven’t eaten them for a long time since I found out that they are loaded with fat and preservatives.

“A pop-science journey into the surprising ingredients found in dozens of common processed foods, using the Twinkie label as a guide.”    http://www.twinkiedeconstructed.com/Twinkiewebsite/Welcome.html

The study was done at  the University of Illinois which is located in Champaign/Urbana Illinois.  Jim and I lived just 30 miles from the UI.  We both worked at Chanute AFB In Rantoul Illinois.  I carried a Twinkie to work in my lunch every day until I read about this study.  Goodbye Twinkies and now goodbye Twinkies forever.  It has been proven that a Twinkie has so much preservative that it will stand alone without changing  color or becoming moldy for an extended period of time.  It just stands alone and does nothing.  And now I feel this compelling need to check out the local stores to see if there are any Twinkies.

On a serious note, the Hostess liquidation is costing 200 jobs in Peoria.  So this is a really big thing here.

**********

Thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers.  I was fitted with the heart monitor on Thursday which I have to wear for 28 days.

Have a peaceful weekend.  Stay safe and be happy!!

Beth

  3. It's so sad at the number of job losses this is causing....I heard 18,500. My husband has been out of work for close to a year. So sad. HOPE they find out what the trouble is with your heart.

  6. Beth, Hostess is going under due to corporate greed, not the so called strike...they will erase the brand name, make the same things cheaper, hire all new people for less...in other words, be a twinkie.:):) enjoy your weekend. xoxo, Susie

  7. I honestly cannot remember eating a Twinkie at anytime in my life! I certainly have eaten more than my share of other "junk!" It is a sad day in my town, too, as there will be some jobs lost locally.

Take care of yourself, Beth, and have a good week-end!

  9. Be well, feel better Beth. I guess I would be more worried about polluted air and water than I would be about eating a Twinkie once in a while. I like them. (liked)

  10. blessings.....
you can make your own twinkie without all the preservatives.....

a simple sponge cake which consist of egg, butter, sugar with the filling (whipped cream), its pretty much the say except without all the "preservatives"

  11. Hi Beth . . . you are a sweetheart and you are in my prayers.

I worked for Wonder/Hostess for eight years and they were a very good company to work for. They started downsizing around ten years ago, at least that is when they closed our local store. It has got to be hard on all those people loosing their jobs, especially when times are so hard right now.

On a brighter note . . . thank you for the kind and loving comment that you left about Steve's Whirligig Christmas Alligator. . I think that you are right.
Our granddaughters are 5 and 6 years old . . . and I know that they are going to love grandpa's comical alligator.
    Happy Thanksgiving.
    Your blogging sister, Connie :)

  12. So sorry that is happening. I've bought Twinkies through the years - not on a regular basis but off and on when there was a hunger for such. I'm feeling so bad for all the employees affected. I already knew it was full of chemicals - but then almost everything is now days unless you live where you can have a nice big garden and are prepared to a lot of work.,

  13. I don't think I've eaten a Twinkie since I was a kid, so I guess I won't miss them. It's sad about so many losing their jobs though.

  16. Twinkies may have been the guilty pleasure but I also am more sad about the jobs being lost. I guess we can only pray
that things will get better and meantime lend a hand whenever we can.

  17. I hope that your heart is just fine. And all today Hostess lost 18,500 people - their union wanted more money. lol sandie

  18. It is sad to see them close. The ONLY reason they are closing is because over 18,000 workers went on strike for HIGHER wages. They had great benefits and most of the people that worked on the assembly line were being paid up to $20 per hour. Not a bad wage, I would say. They would not resolve the situation and, as a result, they cannot afford to resume operations. It is sad all the way around. xo Diana

  19. I hope your heart is okay. :) The Hostess workers should have quit their strike. That's a bad situation all around.
Hope you have a fabulous Sunday!

  20. SIS..hope you are able to rest some with that THING on you. I know it will seem like forever wearing it. Hope things go okay with it. As for the TWINKIE..yes I sure have eaten my share of them over the years. I loved them split open with strawberries..Nothing better than that! I know a mexican company is in the news today called BIMBO..they will probably purchase them and keep the factories open in the USA. WONDER BREAD is also made by the HOSTESS company so they will surely work quickly to keep things going.SHELVES quickly sold out just about everywhere..people kind of panicked early I think..THEY SHALL RETURN. Take care XOXO

  21. My personal favorite when I was a kid were the hostess cupcakes. When I was a kid they were completely covered with chocolate frosting. Later on they just covered on top. I have not eaten Wonderbread since I was young as well, because I do prefer a crusty Italian bread, but I will miss seeing the familiar packaging on the shelf. Who knows, someone may buy up the rights to these well known, iconic brands. It's a part of Americana.
I hope things progress positively on the medical front Beth.

  22. A bad situation all around. So much for the twinkie out lasting the Zombie Apocolypse and Cock roaches.
BO swept in to save the car industry..too bad MOOCHELLE won't let him do it for hostess.

  23. Beth, I feel like you do. Twinkies are a no no on my list of foods to eat. But they connect us to a happier time in our lives....one that had lunch boxes. You like my Grandfather always had one placed within it. Two major things happening in your area....the Twinkie plant closing down and a nuclear power plant up in Two Rivers are both closing down which employed around 600 people. 600 plus 200 equals 800 times two equals 1600+kids and that's a lot of people affected. I am shocked at the news from both. We bought a box of Twinkies one last time and I had one. Yuck:) Now the box sits up in our cupboard. Good thing they'll last a long time:)

  24. I was stunned to see Hostess going down. I used to eat Zingers as a kid and an occasional fruit pie but it's been a very long time. I pray you keep getting better my friend, sorry for all of that.

  25. I haven't eaten a Twinkie for decades. But I used to like the chocolate cupcake things with the white icing swirled across the top--whatever they were called. And, obviously, haven't had one of those either for many years. Does it say something about America that we've gotten to be healthier eaters to the point we've put Twinkies out of business?

  26. Sorry to hear about your health.

As for Hostess, it is sad but it reflects just how bad the economic situation really is. In fact, I'd say the U.S is a full blown recession.

  27. I always loved Twinkles until I found out what was in them. I still ate them--just not very often! Hope everything turns out OK with the heart monitor. I had to do that once too, but everything came out fine. Sending prayers for good results on your behalf!

  28. I'm glad you were fitted with the monitor and wishing you wonderful health! And yes...Can we believe that Twinkies will be gone forever??? AND why is it that everyone we love is bad for us????
