Rain, rain….

tapping on my window pane.  It is dark and dreary this morning at 38 degrees .  The rain is falling and it put paid to my going grocery shopping this morning.
put paid to (third-person singular simple present puts paid to, present participle putting paid to, simple past and past participle put paid to)
  1. To mark a bill or a debt record as "paid".  [quotations ▼]
  2. (chiefly to terminate; to cancel (plans or expectations); to stop something once and for all
The rain put paid to our plans for a picnic.
There is a lot of things I could do this morning but is there really any sense in cleaning when the rain is coming down??  I thought not.  Perhaps I will dig around in the freezer and find something good to cook for myself.  I know that I have one more rib eye  steak in the freezer,  Also I think I might be in the mood to bake something.
How does this sound?

Cherry Coffee Cake
  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 1/2 cup canola or vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 can cherry pie filling
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar glaze
  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees.  Lightly spray bottom and sides of 15”X10” (jelly roll) pan.
  2. In large bowl, stir cake mix, oil, water, vanilla and eggs until batter forms.
  3. Set aside 3/4 cup batter.  Spread remaining batter evenly in pan.  Spread pie filling evenly over batter in pan.  Drop remaining batter, 1 tablespoonful at a time onto pie filling, spreading slightly.
  4. Bake about 35 minutes or until toothpick inserted near center of cake comes out clean,  Drizzle glaze over warm coffee cake.
2 tbsp. warm milk
1 1/2 c. confectioners' sugar
Blend together thoroughly.

I always like to bake something when I have all of the ingredients on hand.  I also use a 13x9 pan for this recipe (extend baking time a few minutes) although I do have a 15x10 pan that I use for Texas Sheet Cake.

And there, see, I have outlined my day and it doesn’t include one bit of cleaning.  I hope you all have a great day.  Stay safe and be happy!!

  1. 'put paid' is a new phrase to me! thanks for that!

  2. hehe, no cleaning....i think, you get points for thinking about it!! cherry coffee cake sounds yummy!!

i had so much trouble with my computer yesterday, i could not get your blog to load. sorry i missed you yesterday but i read it today!!

  3. Thank you for the explanation of that phrase: put paid to. I have never heard it until now. Yes, cold rain could put paid to most plans. Your indoor plans sound great. Take a photo of that cake! I'd love to see what it looks like. It must be a pretty one!

  4. I haven't heard that phrase in many years! I had forgotten it until you said it! I copied down your recipe for coffee cake- it sounds delicious and easy. Hope you have a good (albeit rainy) day. xo Diana

  5. Nope--never heard that phrase either. huh...

However, the same thing is happening here...rain rain...chilly, but over 40. I'm thinking about a stew perhaps..Hobbit Stew (made with roasted root vegetables) or a regular old stew, if there is any beef in the freezer (probably not...we really don't eat that much beef). Thinking of some nice yeast rolls to go with that. And something for dessert. But the farthest I am venturing from this house is the chicken coop. I am tired of being on the run the past few weeks. :)

  6. Well Beth, it's dreary, cold and rainy in Texas too! I know we are ready for THE SUN! I was reading a post from one of my Maine friend's today and they are so very weary of winter..more than usual! The cherry cake sounds divine...I am saving the recipe! Thank you love, for sharing with us!

  7. I liked the "put paid" . . . and look forward to using it.

  8. My dad didn't include cleaning either, but I did get up and clean out the kitchen cabinets. Well, almost! Still have the spice cabinet to do. You know how smelly it can get with all of them put together.

  9. I have never heard that expression before. We say, "done deal," meaning the same, though. Now you've made me want cake!

  10. I've never heard that phrase before. It was raining this morning but has turned to snow now which I think has "put paid to" going to the library for a book to read.

  11. I like to clean on rainy days. I also like to bake and read. : )
Nice today but the rain is coming here tonight. I'll probably be walking in the rain tomorrow.

  12. We are getting snow in Montreal, then rain, and maybe freezing rain. That coffee cake sounds so good.

  22. Oh, BETH! I was SOOO glad to see you! Gosh, I never thought anyone would see that new post after 3 years of being gone. But you, oh boy, the best Beth on Earth ran right over and wrote. You are such a dear and I am grinnin' mightily over here. I saw you have 3 blogs now and when I left, there were 2. Lots of reading to catch up, wow, but it will be fun. You know I could type a book of comments to you here, but I'll bow out. Just know that I am thrilled to hear from you and even more thrilled to see 'your' blog again....I think I can taste that cherry coffee cake right this minute. Oooo, it would be the death of me; I'd eat the whole darn thing ;) We are definitely going to catch up, hot dog! (Maybe I'll even make another awful vid like the one to the dealership, lol)
    MUCH love to you, sweets!
