I love a sunny day…

and that is what we are having in central Illinois today.  The temp is 38 degrees right now to climb up to the mid 60s.

And speaking of Illinois…I just hate it when our state is pronounced ill-a-noise instead of ill-a-noi’.  Very irritating.  Some commercials are being run now on television by our local gas/electric provider for central Illinois.  These commercials are supposedly telling us how Ameren IL is helping its customers to save money on their utility bill.  That is all fine and dandy but one lady pronounces Illinois with the noise ending.  I probably shouldn’t let it irritate me but it does.  My own thought is lady, you don’t live in Illinois if you can’t pronounce it so why are you in this advertisement?

  1. How strange, Beth! Pronouncing the name of your state correctly was ingrained in me in elementary school! That would bother me, too.

Enjoy your sunshine! We have some today, too. xo Nellie

    1. Oh Nellie, I did too. One of the first things I learned in geography class was the states, the shape of them etc.

  4. I completely understand your annoyance at the pronunciation of your state's name. It happens often with names of towns around here as well, especially on local stations and their news reporters who come from another area. Beautiful here today and windy. I hung out blankets and throws to air.

  7. I completely understand that and it makes it bad for people from another country when they pronounce the names incorrectly, then we don't know how to say the names right, I hope you have a nice day,

  10. Thank you, Beth, honestly for the pronunciation of your state. I must confess this Georgia girl draws everything out and I'm so Southern that even my family laughs at me sometimes. No really, I think I had Illinois right though:)Thanks for your encouraging word.

  11. Beth, I have probably pronounced it both ways. I honestly will try to remember there is no "S" sound in the name. Glad you are having some wonderful sunshine. IT's pretty here but not as warm. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

  13. I hate when people pronounce it with NOISE on the end of it and I don't even live there. We live on Nicolet (Nic coh lay) after the explorer and even people that live here sometimes pronounce it NICKELET. lol Just a peeve. xo Diana

  14. It's really annoying isn't it. I think it's especially bad when TV people do it. They of all people should learn the appropriate way to say the word.

  15. It was a great day in Illinois today! I agree -- it's frustrating when people mispronounce our state name, especially when it's done by people living here.

  16. Pronunciation of words differ from country to country. It is very important to pronounce the words correctly so that others can understand!

  18. When I prepared to moved to Illinois, I was shocked that so many people pronounced the name with noise on the end. How can Americans not know how to pronounce the name of one of our states?

    Love,

  19. A jolly good rant Beth, quite right, but I don't think people get places in Scotland right any less, in fact probably more so, and it makes we Scots laugh when we hear Milngavie pronounced as it's written instead on Millgy, and Strathaven which should be Strayven, oh I could go on,
Glad your weather has taken a turn for the better, it doesn't seem so long ago it was snowing. Enjoy it, tomorrow could be rain.
