Who am I?

Until a few years ago I always assumed that I was Irish and French. Then quite by accident I found out otherwise.

It was Mother's Day and I was alone. I had recently lost my husband and my children lived some distance from me. I decided to put my mother's maiden name in the computer and lo and behold, up popped a picture of my grandparents holding my mother as a babe in my grandmother's arms.

One of my unknown cousins had done extensive family research and my roots were traced back to The Netherlands, early 1600s.

Actually, I wasn't too happy to learn this. My dad was almost full blooded Irish. In fact when my sister visited Ireland a few years ago there was a village there where many of the residents shared my maiden name.

I have become used to my dual heritage now but you may still call me an Irish Lady.

  1. It is so neat to actually KNOW your heritage. I have no idea at all what we are. I think one of my aunts may have that info but she didn't share it with me,, :( Take care and I am glad to get this link!!

  2. That is so interesting to find out! All I know my Dad was born in Germany came over here when he was 12, my maiden name was Wildenkron and don't see any around except I think I found a cousin, but not sure, my grandparents went by Von Wildrenkron. I wished I asked more questions as all have passed away. My Mom was English, Dutch and Seneca Indian, really don't know much more then that. Syd's dad Roebuck was born in England and his Mom French Canadian. Not only that but Syd and I were only children! Happy First Summer Day!!

  3. HI there Beth, (or Irish Lady!!)
Lovely to see you on here..
my grandad's name was Jim, (James Earnest)..so it seemed natural to use it in the storyline.
I can understand your excitement in finding out more about your ancestry, I felt the same trying to find my Grandads parentage. There was so much secrecy in the family we wondered what on earth was buried.(hopefully no skeletons) but I used Ancestry.com and Genes Reunited and was able to trace our family back to the late 1700's and the most exciting thing was, we found my grandads family and were able to buy a copy of his birth certificate..I felt quite the detective..xx

  8. That's cool! I've been doing extensive research on Ancestry.com and I'm about 2/3 German with a significant amount of American Indian and then little bits of Irish, Scots & Swiss thrown in for good measure
