PEKIN —

Two employees chased a man from the Kroger grocery store he had just robbed Sunday, but stopped when he paused, turned and aimed a handgun at them.

No one was injured, but the robber escaped and was still being sought Monday afternoon, as police reviewed security camera video and other evidence the thief left behind, said Pekin Police Detective Don Jolly.

Shortly after 2:30 p.m. the man entered the store at 1607 Broadway St. and asked one of the checkout clerks if she would exchange some dollar bills he had for change, Jolly said. When the clerk opened the register, the man handed her a note, stating, “This is a robbery and he had a gun,” Jolly said. Without displaying the weapon, the man grabbed an undetermined amount of cash from the register and ran from the store.

Two employees gave chase, but the robber disappeared after he froze them by pointing his handgun, Jolly said.

He was described as white, about 6 feet tall and wearing a dark hat with an emblem and dark short-sleeved shirt, shorts and shoes.

This happened Sunday afternoon.  I do my grocery shopping  in the morning.  Needless to say this bothered me a bit.  I have been shopping there for over a year now since I moved here.

***********************************************************************

I woke up this morning to severe thunderstorms.  My beautiful tomato plants were knocked over and some of the tomatoes knocked off.  I haven’t been able to get out and take care of the plants because of the rain.  It is still back as pitch out right now.  The best thing about this is the temporary relief from the heat.  I was listening to the weather on my weather scanner this morning and this heat is forecast to last through all of next week too…  Clear into August where we have the dog days of summer.

I hope you all have a great weekend.  Stay safe and be happy!!

  2. Scary indeed.. I always watch people around me when I go into a store and when I get ready to check out.People are getting so brazen these days..poverty is so rampant people are suffering.Either that or he was just stupid! Sorry bout your tomatoes..I know it is hard to see them fall like that. Our storms have been pretty violent lately. Two nights ina row here..not much sleep. I don't ever remember such a humid summer either. Just nice heat would be okay but that humidity sucks! Stay safe and cool SIS!!

  4. Sorry to hear about the robbery. Unfortunately there have been more and more really bad crimes around our area lately too. A sad sign of the times I guess.

  5. Hey make a quick salad like my mom used to do. Cut the tomatoes up with some onions (cut onion in slivers), olive oil, oregeno, salt,(just a little) and pepper. Best if eaten with a crusty Italian bread. I'm having that with my supper tonight.
I've been in stores that were robbed. However being in the back we were unaware it was happening.

  7. I'm a concealed weapon permit owner and such things make my blood run cold. There's been occasional robberies here though they are rare for the most part. I'm very thankful that nobody was hurt in these incidents and I pray that the person responsible is brought to justice. We had some amazing thunderstorms when we were in our mountain cabin however it was more flash and bang then anything dangerous. Bless you my friend, have a great day!

  11. That IS scary. Hope they catch that guy. That is one thing I feel blessed about living in a small town, everyone knows everyone and if someone tries to rob the locals will have them down on their knees prayin! Jist say'in...lol. Rain storms here and such a relief from the heat. All next week more heat again. Fried green maders or set them in window so sun can ripen them or wrap newspaper and put in dark cool place to ripen. Sorry the storm ruined your maters :-(

  12. I'm glad you are getting the rain for a little relief. If the green tomatoes are far enough along they will ripen in a kitchen window. I used to do that in when The season ended early in Minnesota and I wanted to save as many as I could. You don't have enough summer for them to get ripe until the first frosts come. We can't have gardens with food here because we are too close to a river and people are afraid of river rats. We can't feed birds for the same reason, but I do keep a hummingbird feeder. Stay safe, Beth. Another interesting post! ( I have to become anonimous again because this is another night they don't like my same sign in for Word Press. Sometimes they like it and sometimes they don't. I'm Bertie

  13. Hi Beth,

I was involved in a similar experience some years back and I have never forgotten it. It is a very frightening experience. Pray God will protect you and give you peace, they say it seldom happens in the same place twice.

    Shame about your tomatoes.

    Hugs Nita.

  15. Thunderstorms and heavy rain are forecast for us this afternoon and evening. We can use the rain but I'm not looking forward to the humidity afterwards. Hope the mater plants come through okay.

  16. Goodness me Beth, That must have been scary for the shopstaff, and you're bound to be worried about shopping there, hopefully it was a one off incident, you can't let these incidents rule your life.
    |I can't remember the last time we had a good thunderstorm, it hasn't really been hot enough for long enough.
Thanks for calling by and for your kind comments. I'm on anti inflammatory drugs which are helping a bit.
    Take care.

  17. Well thank God no one got hurt. I hate to say but we are experiencing the most perfect weather. Sunny blues skies with a slight breeze. Very barable. Been catching up on your blogs. I see you have a been garage saleing again. I sometime wish I lived near neighborhoods so I can do that. I helped a friend with 2 huges garages sale so far this summer. Her hubby passed away last fall so she had all his shop stuff and more to get rid of. My husband and I ended up spending a lot of money for her stuff. She kept wanting to just give it to us for helping her, but if I can affort it I felt I should pay. Anyway we do enjoy some while down in California. Only now I want to keep things simple so no clutter. Oh well I can look for lots of yard art stuff. Ok I am rambling here. Anyway have a wonderful weekend. Hugs Carrie
