The day after…

a very long day.  Yesterday was a super long day.  I have been having some bad side effects to 2 new meds that I was taking so the morning was spent waiting for the nurse to call me.  The afternoon was spent at 2 appointments and I didn’t get home till almost 6:30 PM.  Nothing like Peoria traffic after dark.  On the way home we stopped at the pharmacy to pick up a new med that the nurse I had spoken to in the morning had ordered.  You guessed it, on my allergy list.  Now I have to waste the morning waiting for a return call.  On the bright side I have been given the OK to start working out again.  Starting very slowly at 5 minutes per day for a few days and then working up to 10 minutes and then on up to my regular 30.  No lifting weights for awhile though.  And that is my gossipy rant for today.

I am over my little  aggravated spell.  One of my bogging friends suggested that perhaps the person was having a bad day and not feeling well.  I have bad days myself so I took that into consideration and I forgive him.  Thank you all for the supporting comments.  Twin and Bro, it is good to know you have my back!  Love you all.

I am trying to think of something to make for a cookie exchange.  It has to be 3 dozen of something divided into 6 portions and packaged separately.  A lovely lady from my daughter’s church hosts this.  Any ideas for me as I would like to make something special.

A photo from last year’s cookie exchange.  My favorite thing there was divinity which I love.

Have to close this off now as I have to call the doctor’s office again and tell them about this new med that I have no intention of even starting.

You all stay safe and be happy!!

Beth

  1. Sis so sorry you are still having troubles I sure wish they would have a copy of your allergies etc so the meds can be given without a hassle.. Sheesh.. As for the Cookie deal.. best and fastest now is the cookies made with a cake mix.. it makes a lot and all varieties depending on the cake mix.. fast and they stay soft. I am all for not working too hard and that recipe is a gem. Posted at my recipeblog.Anyway I am sure whatever you decide will be so tasty. I contributed that 5 min. fudge to a bake sale here and they netted $2300. all totaled which was pretty darn good.Hope you got missed by all that snow that was around last night. We did.. not a flake here. Take care : ) XXOO

  2. My favorite thing that my grandma used to make at Christmastime was Buckeyes. Have you ever made those? It was a peanut butter ball with yummy chocolate on the outside. Oh how I miss my grandma's buckeyes!

  3. I am the baking queen at the holidays and have a multitude of great cookies for cookie swaps. They range from easy to "takes a little more time but so worth it." A hit every year with everybody is my orange cookies with orange cream icing. The whole thing is homemade and you have to squeezee and zest the oranges...not to mention you have to icing all the cookies, but they are absolutely to die for. If you want the recipe, just email me at mamawsplace@gmail.com. If you want something simpler, I have several other good recipes for "made from scratch" cookies.

  4. From "The American Peoples' Cookbook"

During the Civil War, a wounded prisoner in a hospital near Gettysburg tasted cookies brought by a compassionate visitor and he asked for the recipe for his own mother.  These cookies became a family favorite.  Dorothy J. Marcussen, Riverton, Illinois.

    Lightly grease cookie sheets.

Prepare and set aside to cool
1 cup double-strength coffee (I used instant, and just used twice as much as recommended)

    Coarsely chop and set aside
1 cup (about 4 oz.) nuts (I used pecans, not salted)

    Measure and set aside
                2 cups dark, seedless raisins

    Sift together and set aside
                3 cups sifted flower (flour)
                1 teaspoon allspice
                1 teaspoon nutmeg
                1 teaspoon cinnamon
                1 teaspoon baking soda

    Cream thoroughly
                2/3 cup shortening

Add gradually, creaming until fluffy after each addition,
2 cups firmly packed brown sugar (I only had light brown sugar left, but dark would be a richer taste)

Add, in thirds, beating thoroughly after each addition
               2 eggs, well beaten

Mixing until well blended after each addition, alternately add dry ingredients in fourths, cooled coffee in thirds, to creamed mixture.  Stir in the raisins and nuts.  Drop by teaspoonfuls about 2 in. apart onto cookie sheets.

Bake at 375 F about 12 min.  Remove to cooling racks.

About 6 dozen, 2 inch cookies
    **********************************************************************
The finished mixture, before baking, is very loose and creamy, but the cookies puff up a little, and are scrumptious.  On about 1/2 of them, I sprinkled cappuccino flavored sugar - just a tiny amount, to be pretty and tasty.  Also, my oven, compared to my friend's ( we baked together a few days this week ) cooks hotter, so 12 minutes was about 2 minutes longer than I would have done.  Depending upon your oven and your recipe outcome....I'd suggest checking at 10 and going to 12 if your oven warrants the adjustment.

I like these because of the spices...they're similar to Hermits, but not as spicy, so they are a mild, but tasty cookie without that too-sweet afterburn!

  5. MMMMMMM COOKIES!!! Sorry you're going through similar medical problems. The changes made in my meds produced terrible side effects and put me out of action for nearly 3 weeks. I finally just refused to take 2 of them. The doctor's not pleased but I no longer feel like I need to die to feel better.

  7. Sorry you have had such a run-around with the meds, clinics, pharmacies...I hope it all gets sorted out soon.

All this talk of cookies I might have to make something this year myself--LOL! Haven't made Christmas cookies for years! I'm sure Dagan and Leah would take some. ;)

Whatever you make, have fun! Hope you feel much better soon. *hugs*

  8. I'm lucky that in all my years I have only had one medication, so far, that didn't agree with me.

  9. I think that there can be little else worse then things that are supposed to help creating yet more trouble. I'm really sorry about that Beth. It's been strange weather here...I thought were going to get nailed again today after we got a weather advisory but nothing came of it...at least not yet. It looks a lot like Christmas on your site Beth!

  12. Sorry you are having such a time with your meds. I hope they figure it out and get you better. I haven't done cookies for holidays yet. I am behind!

  13. I wonder if you need a new doctor. There should be very few if any errors. You need to feel better, not worse. I hope they find a way to help you and not compound the problem. Prayers for you. Hugs. bertieblue

  14. My heart goes out to you for all you are going thru. You and I have similar problems, just different diseases we are battling. You are entitled to have "down" days now and then. It's so frustrating depending on meds because you never know how they will react in your system. My list of meds I can't take is growing longer by the day, and I suspect yours is also. I hope it can get straightened out for you soon.

  15. Darn, why does it always so many tries to get the right meds? It almost makes a person want to say 'forget the whole thing' and of course that is no option at all. Hope they get it all straightened out soon.

  16. Beth, Thank God you were able to see that that medication was bad before you took it. Honestly, isn't that something the nurses and Doctors should look at before they prescribe it?...very scary. I hope you are able to get the right meds without too much trouble. I am supposed to bring Christmas cookies tomorrow for a "cake walk" ( I really don't know what that is) I don't (or should I say can't)bake cookies from scratch so I guess another trip to the bakery will be on my errands tomorrow! Good luck! :O)
    Blessings, Joanne

  17. I just hate how meds can mess a person up. I have so many problems with taking medication. If there is a side effect, I get it. Get better. Those cookies look mighty good.
