At Days End

by John Hall

Is anybody happier because you passed his way?

Does anyone remember that you spoke to him today?

The day is almost over, and its toiling time is through;

Is there anyone to utter now a kindly word of you?

Can you say tonight, in parting with the day that’s slipping fast,

That you helped a single brother of the many that you passed?

Is a single heart rejoicing over what you did or said;

Does the man whose hopes were fading, now with courage look ahead?

Did you waste the day, or lose it? Was it well or sorely spent?

Did you leave a trail of kindness, or a scar of discontent?

As you close your eyes in slumber, do you think that God will say,

"You have earned one more tomorrow by the work you did today?"

******************************************************************************************

I found this poem on a piece of paper that my mother gave to me when Jim and I were first married. I have looked on the net and I found several poets by this name but no John Hall that has this poem listed under his credits. If anyone has any info on this poem/poet I would love to hear it.

I originally posted this on my blog at Windows Live Spaces several years ago.  It is on one of my wordpress blogs that I transferred over when MLS closed our blogs.  I still get comments on it.  We are now in the month of March.  At this time I will discontinue the countdown to Spring.  The first day of spring is actually 2 weeks from next Tuesday.

You all stay safe and be happy!!

Beth

  3. I love the meaning of it..seem to recall it on your other WLS blog.I think SPRING is already here for many places. Seeing the destruction from the tornadoes this past few days and the 50 in the forecast next week..it's ever so close at hand.Glad you stayed safe as well as Twin. A scary time for so many. XXOO to you..

  5. Very cool poem my friend, I've never heard of it before. You are right about the whole new month. The stories around here were mostly about "leap babies" born on leap year. Time is...wait for it...marching on...ugh! Good news is spring is unstoppable and on our door step now!

  7. What a great poem! Well written and very thought provoking! Made me think back on my day! Isn't it great that it's finally March? Now it seems like spring will truly be just around the corner . . . even though we had a dusting of snow on the ground when I got up this morning! It's gone now!

  8. I am glad you reposted this poem, as I am new and I didn't get to read it before. I have never heard it. It's inspiring.

    So why did you stop the countdown? I feel like an astronaut inside the shuttle waiting for lift off, and no one is counting down....what if my count is not the same? I was enjoying seeing how many days til spring everyday.

    I hope you are feeling better today than yesterday.

  10. The header picture is sedum. It is a remarkable plant in that you can break off a piece of a plant, stick it in the ground and it grows and spreads.These are plants I had at home. In the fall of the year they turn a beautiful rosy pink. The butterflies love them as do all kinds of bugs. lol

  12. What a lovely poem! I try hard to live my life that way as much as I can. I know I don't always succeed, but I just keep trying. I loved this!!

  13. This was an awesome post my Dear Beth! Certainly pulls at the heart strings while causing one to think about their actions and words... those done and those left undone/unsaid. The purpose of life is not just to be happy, but to matter, to be productive, to be useful, to leave a positive footprint behind when we leave this world. Nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something... right? Right!
