Happy Birthday Elvis…

Elvis would have been 78 years old today.  I remember the day,  August  16. 1977, that he died.  I remember thinking that if Elvis is mortal then I could die too.  I remember the National Enquirer picture of Elvis in his coffin that graced the front page of that gossip magazine.  He looked so bloated, nothing at all like the handsome young man that had all of the little teeny boppers screaming their heads off when he would wiggle.  Overeating and drugs were found to have caused his death.

I wasn’t a huge Elvis fan but I did like some of his songs.  His version of Blue Christmas that he did on his Hawaiian tour is my favorite song of his.

I remember when I was working at Chanute AFB in 1988 and it was announced that Chanute was one of the bases being closed.  The local radio station in Champaign redid his song “Don’t Be Cruel” and inserted the words “to the town of Rantoul.”  Rantoul IL is where Chanute was located.  I had a recording of the song at one time but it has long been lost.  Fortunately my husband had enough years in to take an early retirement.  I soon followed in 1989.

I am doing laundry while I am typing this and later on this morning I have an appointment for a haircut.  I have a dilemma here.  My favorite beautician left for another job and now I find that she is back in the salon I go to.  The lady who has been cutting my hair is an extremely nice lady but I do NOT like the way she cuts my hair.  How can I get my favorite back without hurting my present gal’s feelings?  HELP!!

I hope you all have a great day.  Stay safe and be happy!!

Beth

  1. My husband is one of Elvis's biggest fans! Both of us especially prefer his gospel songs, though.

Wish I could help with that salon dilemma. No ideas though.

    Have a good Tuesday!

  2. Glad things are going better for you. I understand your dilemma about the hairdresser thing. I too have that problem, so I switch from one gal to the other from time to time. Everyone seems happy and no one seems slighted. I know you'll be diplomatic in your approach to the favorite hairdresser and not hurt the other gals feelings. Just stay positive to everyone and all will be fine. Good luck and tell us how it comes out!

  3. I just loved Elvis and as a teen he could do no wrong in my eyes. Fortunately we all grow and realized even the stars are just human after all. My youngest son is a big Elvis fan. I don't have a clue as to your hairdresser problem. I know you will work it out and all will be happy.

  4. Hi Beth,

I was a bit of an Elvis fan and although I knew he was older than I, didn't realise he would have been 78 yrs old. I still tend to think of him and others as young men/women. I said to my brother last week, I see somebody I haven't seen for years and think gosh they have changed they look a lot older - duh - lol, after 30/40 years they would and no doubt think the same about me :)

    Take Care - Hugs Nita

  5. Oh I had that happen to me with a hairdresser. You can always send her a nice little note say thank you for taking care of you while your girl was away. You are grateful she took care of you doing this time. Then make an apt with your girl you like :). It's your hair and you don't want to be unhappy with it to not hurt someone else's feelings!

  6. I can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when they announced Elvis had died on the radio! I was crushed! Just be honest and kind to the hairdresser - perhaps saying you would like to try something new with someone else. I found you thru Katie Isabella's blog.

  7. I was a big Elvis fan! They are having a birthday party for him at the nursing home where my mom is. I'll have to go visit her and get in on the party.:)
I like Alexis' advice on the hairdresser issue.
    Have a great day!

  8. Beth, The comment flew away, with me not even making one..so sorry. I was going to say ,tell the new girl you truly appreciated her, but that the one you always went to is dear to you. But please don't say anything about not liking the way she cuts your hair...nothing worse than a hair dresser scorned. LOL.

  9. Isn't it funny how music touches us or brings back memories of times past? I wasn't into Elvis but my mom was. I think of her when I hear his music.

  10. Growing up my sister and I loved to watch the Elvis movies. I remember where I was when the TV announced he died. We were in Oklahoma City in a hotel and my sister and I were having a pillow fight when we heard the TV break in with the announcement! BUT today is also my daughter's birthday! She is 20 today and went back to college yesterday. Hope you have a nice day!

  11. "Falling In Love With You" is one of my all time favorite songs. It's ageless. Have you ever been to Graceland? You should go sometime during Elvis Week in August.

  13. Elvis dies on our first wedding anniversary...and I liked most of his music.
I had the same thing happen with the gal that did my hair, too. She left and then came back. I did it kind of sneaky. I asked the girl that took her place what day she took off work. She said she never worked Wednesdays. That is when I called for an appointment with the original gal...and that is when I went in from then on.
    Good luck- xo Diana

  15. My previous boss was insane for elvis-we teased poor Carol all the time about it. She owned the tax office so Elvis pictures, memoribilia and statues were everywhere. I was sad but glad her battle with cancer ended last week. Your post really cheered me up since she is with her first love in heaven-well, second after God.

  17. I've never been an Elvis fan but I do kinda like that song: "A Little Less Conversation". Ironically or not my daughter likes his stuff more than I do...go figure. Hair cuts...ugh, my favorite barber is my wife though she can't understand why...if it's not her I get a different person every single time and I never know what I'll end up with...no thanks!

  18. I actually asked my hairdresser a question recently about if stylists' get upset when their clients switch to another stylist and she said no and it happens all the time. Whether this is true I would know...

    Happy Birthday Elvis :)

  21. I remember the day Elvis died too. We used to watch a lot of his movies when I was younger.

I don't know what to tell you about the hairdresser. I like Alexis's idea above about sending the thank you note.

  23. Shipped shipped to do that already it's hard to believe Elvis would be 78 years old today. We all grow older don't we? Sometimes girls work different days at beauty shops - you could call or have someone call and see what days one works and what days the other works. If there is a day that someone doesn't work and the other one does - you could make an appointment on that day. Have a good day.

  24. I was a big Elvis fan and still enjoy listening to his music today but the thought that he would be 78 is just weird to me he will always be the young good looking singer he was

  25. I think beauticians are used to their clients coming and going. I did that about a year ago and felt so guilty about it. When I said something to the person I was leaving, she just waved it off and said, don't worry about - our clients are always switching back and forth. Actually, I don't think you have to say anything.

  27. Bill is a musician. While we aren't Elvis fans, we respect his place in American Music. Bill says if Life were fair the many Elvis impersonators would be gone, and Elvis would still be here.
Try making an app't when the one hairdresser is off the schedule. That's what I did. Good luck!

  28. Loved Elvis Beth and most of his music oh that voice.
Good Luck with the hair cut Beth, I know how you feel. I tried a different saloon back in Oct2012, and he did a great Job, being a much more experienced stylist paid off to. Ann is right pick another day when she isn't there.
    Hugs Sheila xx

  31. I was not much of an Elvis fan, either. When I was young it was the Beatles. But I liked Elvis, okay.
I would just ask your former beautician if she'd cut your hair again and explain to the new one that you just had the other one for so long first. Hey--you can play the sentimental old lady, right? LOL! Just switch back!! Life is too short. :)
