I need…

a flu shot and a whooping cough shot I overheard a young man say as I was paying for prescriptions in the pharmacy this morning.  The technician told him that they wouldn’t have flu shots in till this afternoon as they had run out of them.  He could have the whooping cough shot this morning or he could wait until this afternoon and get both at the same time.  This guy was desperate to get those shots.  While I was in the pharmacy I heard the technician tell someone on the phone  that the flu shots would be in this afternoon.  I didn’t realize, but is whooping cough making a comeback too?  Rather frightening.  I always get my flu shot in September around my birthday.  The hospital beds are full and there has been a no visitor ban placed on the local hospitals.

And then, you guessed it, I had to stop by Kroger on the way home as I forgot to get bananas yesterday.  With the bad weather  scheduled I didn’t want to run out.  Of course I didn’t get just bananas, I got a few other things too.  What can I say?  I have no willpower.

I have changed bedding and done 2 loads of laundry this morning.  I think I am through working for today.  I have a pot of ham and beans on cooking and I will fix some cornbread to go with it.  Then I am settling down with a good book.

I hope this is a good day for us all.  Stay safe and be happy!!

Beth

  1. yup. have been hearing ads for pertussis vaccines for a couple of years now - to protect the little ones in the family, folks are encouraged to get vaccinated.

  2. The flu outbreak across the country is very scary.
I am also doing laundry this a.m. Your ham/beans and cornbread sound delicious to me.
We are at 72 degrees today and I have a few windows open letting the house air out. It's very cheerful to hear the birds sing.

  3. Good morning, I hope that you stay well, and yes, Whooping Cough is going around too. I hope you get to settle in today with your book and your dinner sounds so nice.
It was nice stopping by today.

  4. Good and interesting post, Beth. Washington has had the Whooping Cough epedemic for almost a year. We are one of the 47 states listed as having the Flu epedemic too. Three deaths in a county just north of us. Jim and I got our shot in early Oct. The news says it is 62% effective. I was in the hospital earlier this week for something else, and Jim and I wash our hands copiously. I carry the hand sanitizer too. But one never knows. I hope you stay healthy. Have a good weekend. 5. The hooping cough thing has been on the local news here a couple of times so I'm aware of it. My kids have all their shots so I'm pretty comfortable with their status. I know a lot of people resist immunizations but I'm not with that crowd for the most part though I hate actually getting them. The temps are single digits today and I'm going to shovel out there today...if it melts and freezes it makes such a mess. Have a good day my friend.

  6. Yes, Whooping cough has made a comeback and our state is full of it. I guess it's because so many young parents now days are afraid to get their young ones vaccinated. I know now and then someone can have a reaction to a shot, but guess I'd rather give my child the shot rather than risk one of these older deadly diseases.

  11. Yes here in Wisconsin we have whooping cough-I can't get any vaccines (egg allergy) so I try to not go out at busy times and wash, wash and wash my hands somemore. Stay healthy!

  12. The flue is scary. They have no visitors allowed at the nursing home so I can't go see my mom. No one there has the flue but they don't want to bring it in.
I hope you are reading a good book now.

  13. Yes, the flu is really going around and many of the hospitals in Chicago are filled to capacity. I had my shot in the fall and my medicine cabinet is stocked! It sounds like you have a great evening planned. We are expecting snow and sleet, too.

    XO,
    Jane

  14. I'm with you, Beth. We get our flu shots early every year...always in September or October. I don't even wait for the "free" shots they give to teachers at school around Thanksgiving. In fact, Charly, Josh and I were the first customers to get flu shots this year at our local CVS. Yes, Whooping Cough and other diseases are making a come back because so many parents now days won't vaccinate their children. I am sure they have good reasons for not vaccinating or at least think they do, but I am glad that my children and grandchildren are all current on their shots. I think we should take advantage of the good things modern medicine can give us. Hope you stay warm and cozy and enjoy your ham and beans!

  15. Sitting down with a book sounds like a plan to me. What are you reading? I have an obsession to know what people are reading. In a restaurant I about stand on my head to see what people are reading.

  22. CNN showed a map of the flu outbreak and yes it was very scary looking indeed. Here's to hopeing that we're able to avoid it!

  23. Yes, whooping cough has been really rough this year. That's what happens when parents don't keep their kids' vaccinations up to date. I know some people don't believe in vaccinations and say they cause autism and other bad things. Would you rather your kids get polio or die from whooping cough? It's a no-brainer for me. And you CAN'T get the flu from the flu shot! Not the real flu, anyway.

  24. I, too, have heard that whooping cough is coming back. I had it once..hope I don't get it again. :(

Apples, grapes, walnuts or pecans are awesome in chicken salad..try it...you might like it...:))

  25. I drove through the great states of Illinois and Missouri on Christmas Eve to visit my son in Kansas City. There were few cars on the road in the early morning fog. Enjoy your beans and cornbread (one of my favorite meals) and your book!

  26. The flu is certainly serious around here as well. 700 cases in Boston. 2000 cases state wide with 18 deaths. Apart from a flu shot your best defense is washing your hands frequently. Working with food causes me to wash my hands constantly all day long. Tough on the skin but it's a simple way to fight it.

  27. Whooping cough is making a comeback here in Aus because some parents are not getting their children immunised against it. Flu shots are common here too usually around May as we come into our colder months......

  28. Aside from being sick, the rest sounds like the perfect day to me!

  30. I have been so sick since Thursday with the worse headache and body aches off an on. Not sure if it's anything or just the after effects of a dental visit and crown. I will definitely be getting my flu shot next year as my hubby does. Hope you enjoyed your ham and beans!

  31. The flu is bad in our area too..the hospital is full. Staying close to home and if we go out we disinfect our grocery cart and wash hands! :)

  32. We always get flu shots in the fall too. My wife Jilda's immune system crashed last year and she's taking monthly infusion (a type of chemo) treatments.
So we are very mindful of trying to stay as healthy as humanly possible.
    That soup sounds great.
