Dumpling Recipe

This recipe is for White Angel.  If you click on my profile you will see a list of my blogs that are on blogger.

Granny De's Dumplings

Oh my these were good. This is the recipe for Jim’s mom’s homemade dumplings. If she were alive she would have been 117 years old this coming July 29th, 2014.

•1 & 1/2 cups flour
•2 teaspoons baking powder
•2 teaspoons salt
•3 tablespoons shortening
•1/2 cup milk (or enough to make desired consistency)

Mix flour, baking powder and salt together. Cut in shortening. Add milk gradually. May need more or less milk. Should be just a little softer dough than a drop biscuit. Drop in boiling broth and cook covered over medium heat for about 15 minutes.
The grandkids were all wild over Granny De’s chicken & dumplings.   For some reason when I make these they don’t taste like Granny De’s.  I do better with the Bisquick.  I have my chicken cooking in  the oven right now.

Funny story about Granny’s recipe.  She would never part with her recipes when she was living.  After she was gone Jim and I were cleaning out her house and I found the recipe for the dumplings handwritten on a tiny scrap of paper tucked in an old recipe booklet.

It is bright and sunny here this morning at 16 degrees.  There is little wind so I walked over to the laundry room without my coat on.  We did get snow yesterday, not quite an inch or so but just enough to mess up the side roads.  I am not planning on going out today unless the UPS guy leaves me the wrong package and I have to chase him down again.  I don’t have anything coming by UPS so I guess I don’t have to think about that.

Have a great week.  Stay safe and be happy!!

  5. Chicken and dumplings! What a good warming winter choice! I didn't grow up with these fluffy type dumplings, though. Ours were rolled out, not quite as flat as pastry, then cut into strips and dropped into the boiling broth, much as one might cook noodles, I imagine.

    Keep warm and safe, Beth!

  6. Beth, You are now the keeper of the recipe :):) I love the old photo. Gosh girl , you are having those freezing temperatures too. I have been chilly all day...but I didn't wear my gloves or scarf. Silly me. I hate driving all bundled up. Take care and stay warm. xoxox,Susie

  9. Isn't that funny, Beth? My mother was kind of like that, too-hoarded her recipes rather than share them. I have some of them and some of my grandmother's too. I love homemade dumplings. xo Diana

  10. Grandmother De looks very young and lovely! How old would she have been then? I have the recipes that I loved from childhood. They all seem to lack something when I make them.

  12. At least there was a recipe. My grandmother just made things without a recipe so we can't reproduce them.

  13. Something about our grandmothers' cooking was so good. Grandma told me it was because she stuck her finger in it :)

  14. Nice picture and memories, Beth. You know, in all my 82 years, I never remember the whole country blanketed with such awful weather at the same time like this past week. Things really are changing. Stay in and stay safe. I wanted to go to my book club meeting tonight, but didn't want to drive icy roads alone so here I sit at home. But reading and then sleep is always a happy option. Stay safe and warm. Bertie

  15. Thanks for the recipe, and the link. Will make the recipe after Christmas and have with hot chicken...Many people I knew wouldn't part with their recipe's and they were often in their head and not written down.
I love the background on that link :)
