Pekin Illinois 2012 Marigold Festival

“The Marigold Festival was started in 1973 to honor one of Pekin's "favorite sons", Senator Everett Dirksen.  While in the United States Congress, Dirksen tried to have the marigold named as the national floral emblem. In support of Dirksen, the community began growing marigolds. While unsuccessful in the national flower contest, Dirksen's hometown of Pekin became known as the "Marigold Capital of the World".    [8] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pekin,_Illinois

Hannah Finley, Miss Marigold 2012

I have mentioned before that the city I live in now is known as the Marigold Capital of the World.   The Marigold Festival begins this Friday and ends on Sunday.

Thunderstorms all around here this morning.  The weather radio first woke me up this morning at 4 AM with a severe thunderstorm warning.

Stay safe and be happy!!

Beth

  1. I've actually always liked Marigolds though it's been a while since I've actually grown any. I'm kind of surprised that Miss Marigold wouldn't have a bouquet of Marigolds. Supposedly storms arrive here tomorrow...I sure hope so. Have a wonderful day my friend.

  2. Lovely Miss Marigold!

For some reason, we have no marigolds planted this year. They are good to have around the garden to deter certain pests.

I hope you have a good Wednesday, Beth!

  4. Those are nice flowers but I don't care much for the smell of them. Very pretty girl in the photo..rained some yesterday but they are fading out across the lake as they go east this morning. We might be in for trouble later today. XX00

  6. They are pretty flowers, for sure. Don't have any planted. You know I have lots of roses, and Jack seems fascinated with Day Lilies. Would like a better variety but those darn lilies seem to spread like wildfire taking up all the space. Even choking off a rose plant. GRRRRRR! What a lovely young lady.

  7. I remember Everett Dirksen! He was a colorful man!

My grandfather always planted marigolds in his yard and every Sunday before church, he would pick one and place it in his lapel. I would comment on what a pretty flower he had and step up on my tippy toes to smell it....not so great smelling, but pretty none the same. Thanks for bringing this memory to my mind this morning. I loved my grandfather so much!

  10. Hello Beth, LOVE community and county festivals! They just bring everyone together in a happy way! Love/hate weather radios too - very necessary when you have storms and such - but they do disturb sleep sometimes! I hope you're having a blessed week,
    Kathy

  12. Inove marigolds and haven't had any that did much good in ages. They are always so small and then they peter out.

  13. If your Marigolds are the same as ours, I love the colour, rich gold, but they are a magnet for blackfly.
Your weather is a bit extreme, be safe

  23. We love marigolds also! They were my father's favorite flowers and I always think of him when I see them. I absolutely love your Tuesday's post about the price of gas. We are a family that is barely making it! I pay the bills and will have some money left over ;) and before I know it, you fill the gas tank up and I'm telling hubby our checkbook is running low! I try so hard not to go anywhere during the week except down to the high school to pick Michael up from football practice, but that's a 15 minute trip one way. To fill my tank is around $75 a week. Hubby usually does his twice a week and we have the same car. I am in no way complaining. I'm grateful that each week the Lord provides for us.
