In the deep freeze..

Here it is, Wednesday morning, the official rant day and I don’t have anything important to complain about except the weather.  For that I simply say “Thank you God.”

It has been bitter cold here since Sunday.  It has warmed up a bit today and we have snow in the forecast for the next couple of days.  Nothing major I think.  Hopefully, I think!

I am so getting geared up for spring.  First comes my daughter’s birthday on Valentine’s Day.  I always look forward to Valentine’s Day for that very reason.  I remember the dozens of heart shaped frosted cookies that I made as room mother through her growing up years.  Some years I was room mother for my daughter and my son at the same time.  Those were fun times even though I was working a full time job at the same time.  Oh, I would love to have some of that energy right now.

Another old picture, taken of me when I was in the 3rd grade.  I remember the dress very well.  It was mint green.  It was made from feed sacks.  My mom had enough material that she cut out 3 dresses apiece for my younger and older sister and me.  She had no pattern.   She put bits of lace or bias tape around the neckline.  To this day I cannot understand how my mother coped.  I feel sure she is getting her rewards in heaven.

Have a great day.  Stay safe and be happy!!

Beth

  2. My mother was a good seamstress but she told me that if she had to sew on what they had "way back then" she would have never started. No patterns to go by,could not have been easy..but very creative. Sure your dress was lovely. Yes very cold but at least no blizzard with it. Happy for that. Stay warm and well Sis.. XOXO

  3. What a cute dress that was...and you were darling, too. I'm always amazed at how my mother managed to cope with seven children in the middle of Illinois in the 60's. She was a wonderful woman.

It's very cold here today, too. I have been baking and it keeps the house warm and smelling good Now, if I can stop eating all of it!

Wishing your daughter a Happy upcoming Birthday!

    XO,
    Jane

  4. Your mama was a creative gal! Love the sweet hairdo she gave you, too. Ohhh...Valentine's cookies. I remember those. Probably should make a few when it's nearer to the day. Thank you for letting me know that it has warmed up a little. I'm waiting for that day...perhaps by Friday.

  6. Hi Beth,
We still have snow, but it is supposed to clear by Monday, when we will have strong winds and floods. Hope your snow is not too bad.

I am not familiar with the term room mother?

  7. I've always been in awe of ladies like your Mom who could create that way. With a set pattern etc. I still have trouble at times.

  8. If heard many saying their weather is bad. I guess they're taking all the nasty stuff from us...it will be nearly fifty all week long for us, I've never seen anything like it. I love that picture of you my friend...who knew when that was taken it would be history in the making! Have a great day!

  11. Amen, she sure is! I so wish I could whip together outfits for the boys. Sewing is so not my thing.

Love the picture and the memory that goes with it :)

  12. Feed sacks?! That is awesome. We need to be more creative and inventive like they were "back in the day." And moms are kind of the unsung heros, I think. We never really appreciate them fully until we are all grown up and have children of our own!

  13. Adorable picture of you! My mother made a lot of my clothes in my very young years. I don't know if I have her sewing talent. :) How fun for daughter's birthday to be on Valentine's Day!
Send us a little of your cold weather. :)

  16. I am a Valentines Baby as well. My mom use to always make me a heart shaped cake. For the longest time I thought I was the only person born that day. Until I watched 20/20 one night with my parents and found out it was Hugh Downs birthday as well. I was crushed. : ( But then again I had all my friends convinced that Robert Dinero was my dad

  20. Hi! It's so nice to meet you. Thanks for following me. I shall follow you, too, but I'm not sure which blogs to follow because you have so many! How about if I start with this one? I used to live in Illinois, near Springfield. I love it that you remember that dress and remember your mom with such fondness and respect.

    Love,

  21. What a pretty picture of you when you were younger!

My brother-in-law has a birthday on Valentine's Day, too.

It truly sounds as though you were VERY busy when your children were younger!

I hope your Wednesday is a good one!

  22. Good post, Beth. Loved the picture. If we had been in the same school, I'll bet we would have been good friends.
I have spring fever too. It's that time of year.

Our children grew up too fast, but I agree I couldn't do it all now, at this age. Guess it is as its meant to be. BGB

  24. Lovely story of the past. You look lovely in that photo :)
Your mum was a clever lady, she had a special gift to be able to make those clothes without a pattern..but I guess she had no choice and maybe didn't know any other way.
Keep warm...shall sent some up to you :)

  25. Your mom was quite creative. My mom was quite good with a needle and thread as well. I still have a pair of jeans that my mom repaired some 25 years ago. I tore the knee and her repair has held up as the jeans have.
We're in the same deep freeze as you are. As I write this at 6:45pm Wed. it's 13 heading towards the low single digits tonight.
    I do like that picture.

The spring time your daughter's birthday on valentine's whit was a reason I remember the frosted cook that I made as room mother her through her growing up yours and my daughter and my son at the same time.

  32. Oh, you were so darling! Love your braid! My mom had feed sack dresses, too. She even lived in a barn for a long time with her mom, sister, and grandparents, who worked on the farm for some people who owned it. Amazing what people can live through and come out sane...not only sane, but giving, loving people. My mom was born in 1934. He dad left them when she was 7, so they made do. She has really had a difficult life. Yet, she has such a wonderful attitude. Just like you!

  33. I love seeing the old photos I have a thing for old photos, I think many mothers today would find it hard to cope the way mothers did way back when.......most wouldn't know how to sew their own clothes.......and yes I am one of them.........lol
